What is a BLU-U?The BLU-U is a blue light of a wavelength that can kill proprionobacteria acnes, a bacteria in your skin that can contribute to the development of acne. The treatment involves sitting with your face in a U-shaped light for a short period of time, usually 15 to 16 minutes.
What is the BLU-U used to treat? The BLU-U is used to treat acne. We recommend 2 treatments a week for 8 weeks. You should gradually see an improvement in your acne. A more aggressive way to treat acne is to use a chemical called alpha-levulanic acid (ALA). This chemical sensitizes the skin to absorb more light and therefore have a greater effect on the destruction of the bacteria. Fewer treatments are need, usually 2, but the treatments are more expensive and this treatment requires that you absolutely stay out of any direct sun for 24-48 hours. Failure to comply can result in a severe sunburn.
Is there any downtime? When the ALA is not used there is no downtime. When the ALA is used there will be a one to two week period where the skin can be red and flaky. It is imperative to avoid ALL UV rays for 48 hours after the ALA is used. UV exposure can cause burning of the skin and intensify any side effects you may have.
Is this treatment expensive?Prices vary depending on if the ALA is used or not. Prices are discussed at the consultation appointment.
