Chemical peels help to smooth out fine lines, improve discoloration and exfoliate the skin. This results in smoother healthier looking skin. After one peel you will notice an improvement in your skin's texture and tone, lessening of fine lines, and a refreshed appearance. Dramatic results may be achieved with a series of peels.
What should I do for my skin before a chemical peel?
It is important to avoid sun exposure and exfoliating products and procedures at least one week prior to treatment. Exfoliating procedures include waxing, hair removal creams, Retin-A or Differin, and glycolic acid products. You should let your skin care expert know what products you are using prior to scheduling your treatment.
How do I care for my skin after a chemical peel?
Your skin may look and feel like a mild windburn for the next two to three days. After 48 hours a slight flaking may occur. For best results use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, gentle cleanser (do not rub) and a moisturizer. Do not pull or help the shedding skin to peel as this could lead to scarring or pigmentation of the skin.
What can a chemical peel do?
Chemical peeling is used to treat fine lines and discoloration of the skin. It can also help to reduce blackheads. Chemical peels also improve the texture of your skin with very little discomfort and downtime.
How are chemical peels performed?
The skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove excess oils. One or more chemical solutions such as glycolic, salicylic acid, lactic acid are used. These applications produce peeling of the top layers of skin, allowing the healthier deeper layers of the skin to appear. During the procedure, most patients experience a warm to hot sensation that may last about five to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation.
What should be expected after treatment?
Depending upon the type of peel, there may be a mild to severe sun burning sensation that last from a few minutes to a few hours following the procedure. Superficial peeling usually involves redness followed by scaling that begins 48 hours after treatment and lasts three to five days.
What different kinds of peels are available?
There are superficial, medium and deep peels. Superficial peel examples are glycolic, salicylic, retinoic and lactic acid peels as well as superficial TCA peels (Obagi Blue Peel). These are the most common type of peel performed and are the type of peels done in our office. We use customized peels suited for your skin type and for your specific skin needs.
